Don't pay costly 0870 phone rates

Lots of companies advertise services like customer support with phone numbers starting 0870…. These are charged at national number rates and are rarely included in any call-inclusive package you may have with your phone company. For example, with Talktalk’s talk3 package, all of my calls to local and national numbers are free regardless of time or day. However, this doesn’t include 0870 numbers. (I don’t think it includes 0845 numbers either, but I’m not sure.)

Companies often have normal geographical numbers as well, but they don’t advertise them. I’ve heard that calling the normal-style number can also get you around the automated call system and straight through to a person, but I’ve not tried this – it must depend on who you phone. Your mileage may vary.

How do you find these “secret” numbers? Use Say No To 0870. Type in the name of the company you’re going to call, or the telephone number they gave you, click search, and use one of the geographical or freephone numbers that are available.
